The SMMC Auxiliary has been an integral part of the hospital family since 1907, raising over $2,000,000. The Auxiliary consists of friends of the hospital including former patients, current employees and retirees, physicians' family members, and neighbors. Auxiliary members live in the communities SMMC serves from Wells to Old Orchard Beach. Each believes in the importance of quality, community health care that provides the latest in diagnostic and treatment technology.
The Auxiliary's main on-going projects include the operation of SMMC's gift shop, the annual Girls Night Out each June, SMMC Benefit Golf Tournament each September, and the Tree of Life memorial celebration which currently supports lifesaving measures at SMMC. Each year, the Auxiliary selects a special project that benefits SMMC, its patients and its staff.
Currently, the Auxiliary is involved in SMMC’s renovation project to convert most inpatient rooms into private rooms at no additional charge to the patient which is a new national standard. The SMMC Auxiliary is supporting this program with a $90,000 pledge to be paid over the next two years because they believe that the enhanced safety, privacy and ability of loved ones to stay close if they wish are critically important. Private rooms will become the standard at SMMC. The transformative project will improve patient and staff safety, privacy, and comfort with improved infection control; enhanced privacy during personal discussions between physicians, nurses, patients, and patients’ families; and reduced noise and disturbances to patients during the healing process. Moreover, each room will include a comfortable visiting area and day bed as well as a mounted lift to assist in the movement of patients.
The SMMC Auxiliary always welcomes new members, including hospital volunteers. They began as a group of 31 and now boast a membership of nearly 250. For more information on the SMMC Auxiliary, please call Melissa Nadeau at 283-7225.
