  • Recently NBC's "Today" show presented a week-long series entitled "Saving Your Life: Modern Medical Miracles." During the first episode of the series, "Today" anchor Matt Lauer spotlighted 64-slice CT (Computerized Tomography) technology. This same state-of-the-art diagnostic technology is available in York County, here at SMMC.

    What is a CT Scan?
CT scan, short for Computerized Tomography and also known as a 'CAT Scan', is a medical diagnostic tool that allows visualization of structures within the human body. This is a non-invasive way for your physician to see inside your body to detect things such as stroke, pulmonary embolism, the extent of trauma and more.

Why is 64-Slice Technology so important?
64-slice technology is the gold standard in CT technology because it puts you in the fast lane for diagnosis. SMMC is the first hospital in York County, and one of only a handful in Maine, with 64-slice CT capabilities. This means in seconds, we get 64 high-resolution anatomical images as thin as a credit card. These images are then combined to form a three-dimensional view of your anatomy for SMMC physicians to analyze. In fact, just 10 seconds, we can obtain a complete, detailed body scan to view anatomy at clarity sometimes not possible even through the most complex of surgeries. The thinner the slices, the more revealing the detail of the images, the more definitive the evaluation, and the faster road to your diagnosis.

What should I expect if I need a CT Scan?
Without compassionate and expert caregivers, even the best images are merely pictures on a computer. Should you or a loved one need a CT Scan, you can expect only the best from the CT staff at SMMC. Our imaging services department has been named 'Best in the Nation' from AVATAR (an independent national patient satisfaction survey organization) for three years in a row because of expertise and attention to detail. Our technicians will guide you through every step of the procedure and answer any questions you may have. They've been doing this for many years and know just what to do to make you comfortable.
