Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC) and PrimeCare Physician Associates recently joined together to form SMMC PrimeCare Physicians, a multi-specialty medical division of Southern Maine Medical Center. PrimeCare Physician Associates received the highest possible rating for quality from the Maine Health Management Coalition for four consecutive years. The resulting healthcare group is now among the largest in Maine, bringing together over 40 primary care physicians and specialists located in Biddeford, Saco, Kennebunk, Old Orchard Beach, and York County’s largest medical center.
- Leadership
The agreement between SMMC and PrimeCare Physician Associates (now SMMC PrimeCare Physicians) breaks new ground, ensuring significant physician involvement in the governance and operations of Southern Maine Medical Center’s comprehensive health care delivery system. The SMMC Board and the new SMMC PrimeCare Physicians subsidiary both have an increased number of physicians. In addition, there is a newly created Joint Operating Committee with equal numbers of administrators and physicians who will work together to improve the health status of the community through patient care and education.
- Education and Training
All incoming physicians undergo a comprehensive orientation program designed to assist them in integrating into the medical community. There is a very comprehensive hospital information system making it easy for physicians to access test results in a timely fashion, and our physician offices have a state-of-the-art electronic medical records system, with great synergy between the hospital-based and physician office systems. Additionally, SMMC offers internal programs, such as our Dinner with Doctors series, presented by our physicians on a variety of topics, and we promote external educational seminars, conferences, and training opportunities available for all physicians.
